Day of Prayer for Care of Creation – Nov 13, 2008

Thank you for Praying!

“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”
James 5:17-18

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
John 14:13-14

We are truly amazed at the response we received from people all over the world to this call for prayer. In addition to Minneapolis, Madison and Limuru, we had people praying in the US in Massachusetts, Ohio, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, and Washington. Elsewhere in the world, people were praying in Cornwall (UK), Peru, Trinidad-Tobago, Mexico City, Ghana, Mombasa, Mozambique and New Zealand. Doubtless there were many others praying in places of which we have no idea.

What happened? Who knows? We know that as God moved people to pray, his hands are moving to answer those prayers. This passage from Isaiah 55 should be encouraging as we continue to work and wait for the things for which we have prayed:

As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return to it without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes forth from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace!
The mountains and the hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees will clap their hands…!!!

Original Call to Prayer:

Care of Creation is now about 3 and one half years old and in that time, God has done amazing things:

  • Through the efforts of Craig and his team in Kenya, thousands of trees have been planted.
  • Many hundreds of Kenyan Christians have heard us share our vision that God is calling us to care for his creation.
  • Pastors and congregations throughout Kenya have begun practical projects in tree planting, water harvesting and similar efforts to reverse the damage to God’s creation.
  • Strategic academic institutions have heeded our call to include this topic in their course offerings, and mission organizations are asking us for counsel as they begin to integrate creation care into their own ministries.

God has done great things and we praise him for all of them…

However, right now (November, 2008) we are facing the most difficult financial crisis we’ve seen in our short history as an organization:

  • All of our supported staff – Craig & Tracy Sorley and Jan Korbel in Kenya, and Ed & Susanna Brown and Fred & Stacey Gluck in Madison – need additional funding in various amounts.
  • We need about $20,000 to cover current and upcoming operational expenses that are not covered by staff member support raising efforts.
  • And most seriously, Care of Creation Kenya only has enough money to pay local salaries and expenses through the end of 2008. In 2009 the Kenya project needs a minimum of $50,000.

We are asking you to join us in prayer for these needs sometime during the day or evening of Thursday, November 13, 2008. Our staff and board members will be joining together in prayer in Limuru, Kenya, Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you are in one of these cities and would like to pray with us in person, send us a note at info [at] careofcreation.org and we’ll let you know where and when you can join us.

  • If you cannot join us in person, please pray with us where ever you are -
  • Include us and our needs in your personal prayer time;
  • Ask for prayer in your small-group or church fellowship;
  • Send this ‘call for prayer’ to your family, add us to your church’s prayer list, let other members of your campus fellowship know about our needs.

Even in the middle of an unprecedented world-wide financial crisis, we believe our God can provide!

If you can help directly (even small gifts of $10 or $20 add up quickly) you can make a donation here.

As you pray with us, let us know you are participating by adding a comment below telling us where you are praying, how many of you are praying, or add a prayer to this list. We thank you and praise God for you!
