Creation Care and The Church: an Earth Day 50th Anniversary Celebration

We regret to announce that this event has been indefinitely postponed.

April 22, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day!

In many ways, our community, Madison Wisconsin, “owns” this event: Earth Day’s founder, Gaylord Nelson, lived here and was serving as our Senator at the time; the Nelson Institute at the University of Wisconsin, named for Gaylord, is one of the world leaders in environmental studies; Cal DeWitt, one of the fathers of the evangelical creation care movement, is a member of the Madison community. It is fitting and appropriate that the Christian community in Madison come together to celebrate this important anniversary as a way of recognizing the importance of the cause of caring for God’s creation, and as a way of reaching out to our larger community. (Click here for more Earth Day history!)

Here is what we have planned:

Saturday, April 18: A Teach-In at Upper House (365 East Campus Mall, Madison 2nd floor) 9:30 am to 3 pm (click here for full program).

Monday, April 20: Nelson Institute’s Annual Earth Day Conference (Monona Terrace) 8:30 am to 5 pm (Separate registration required. Click here.)

Tuesday, April 21: Worship and Prayer focused on God and Creation at Faith Community Bible Church (3 N Park Street, Madison – park in the medical lot across the street) 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

  • Worship led by a local musical group, extended prayer for God’s creation and for those affected by environmental crises around the world. No registration required.

Volunteer Opportunities: Participants will be encouraged to sign up for creation-healing projects in our community at the Saturday teach-in. Note: these projects are hosted and managed by local organizations and agencies, not by Care of Creation.

About families:

This will be a family-friendly event. We regret that we do not have space or resources to provide childcare, however, the programming should be suitable for Middle School age children or older, and there is a reduced rate of $5 for additional family members.
